5 Things to Know Before Moving to Los Angeles

January 13, 2020

You’ll often hear success stories that start with “I moved to Los Angeles.” If it didn’t start that way, most people in entertainment will eventually get to that part of the story. If you’re moving to Los Angeles hoping to also make that part of your story, then you are not the first, and you won’t be the last. Sometimes the people who move here have spent time here and other times they’re brand new, with no contacts, jobs, or anything. If you’re either of these things, then there are some things about moving to Los Angeles that you need to know. These will range from facts about the city, to how movers in Encino, CA can help make the process easier in this new world you’re stepping into.

Traffic is Real

We’ll go ahead and talk about the second most famous thing about the city. The traffic is infamous with almost any sit-com, or stand up comic taking a shot at the traffic at one point or another. Whatever you have heard, if it’s bad then it’s likely true. The city is huge and there’s no way to avoid the traffic. Going 20 miles can be a multi-hour endeavor if you start at the wrong time during the day or evening. Be ready, have a comfortable car.

Los Angeles is Laid Back

This is a city that is quite laid back in its appearance. It’s cutthroat with everyone struggling to get ahead, but you wouldn’t know that when looking at the people. Going to work in jeans and a T-shirt are commonplace and time isn’t something people pay attention to. If someone says they’ll be somewhere, they probably mean sometime later than that. They’ll apologize and then do it again next time. That’s just how things are, take it easy.

Know What City You Want

Los Angeles is big and built of many smaller cities. These cities each have their own distinct feeling and culture to them. They each also have their own unique idiosyncrasies. You need to get a feeling for where you want to live because the city is going to have a large impact on how you live. The traffic will also make it difficult to see friends if your friends live in different cities than you do. Just keep all of this in mind before you decide where you want to move.

The Weather is Everything You Heard About… In the Rich Cities

Inequality is synonymous with Los Angeles. That goes for the weather too. You may have been sold 75 year-round, and depending on where you live, you may get that. If you live in the valley though it’s going to get hot during the summer. It’s not uncommon to see temperatures get up above 105. You’re never going to contest with the harshest weather that the rest of the country has to offer but not everywhere is idyllic… Unless you live in one of the more expensive areas like Santa Monica or Malibu. These are the cities where the weather never changes. Know your city and what the weather there is going to be like. Granted, the entire city is getting a beautiful Mediterranean climate.

Moving is Hard

Housing in Los Angeles is expensive, very expensive if you actually want a house. There’s going to be more space than other large cities like New York but you’re likely going to find yourself on an upper floor of an apartment complex. That’s where you’ll probably need to hire a moving company. They can help you get the heavier stuff up the stairs and take the stress of moving off of you. All you have to do is show up. You can always hire movers in Encino, CA if you’re moving to the area.
