Americans and that’s where the name Malibu comes from. They called the area Humaliwo (The Hu syllable was not stressed). The name meant “The Surf Sounds Loudly” in their language. The word was adopted and would morph into the modern Malibu.
Few roads were built before 1929 in the area. The first major road that ran through the city was built in 1929 and would become known as The Pacific Coast Highway. most of the Big Rock Drive area was purchased in 1936 by William Randolph Hearst would then later sell most of it, Art Jones. Jones went on to become one of the most prominent realtors in the area.
